I need your help!

I want to do something HUGE for Jake's 30th. It's 3 years away (yesterday he turned 27). In that time, I'm looking at hiding away at least $3k for this, maybe more. He's *never* EVER in his whole life had a birthday party. So, I was thinking throw him a HUGE party, right? But then somebody said "What about a destination thing?" And that got me thinking...What if I took the $, and made plans for an AMAZING 3 night getaway to NYC? Still an unforgettable birthday, no?

Let me know which idea you think is better, and what ideas you have for whichever idea you like more! :)

That would be a freaking awesome birthday present. Is he really into NYC though? And I don't think you need $3k to do a really great trip to NYC, so maybe split it between a great trip and a great gift?

I think it depends entirely on your DH. Mine would not like a trip to NYC. (Even if we did not live here.)Mine would not like a party, either. He just turned 50, and I managed to get him to take a Bose Audio thing to play his CD's on a party which included my parents, his mother, us and our kids. However, you have three years to be very sneaky. Every now and then bring up something you think would be fun to do in NYC and see how he reacts. "Wouldn't it be great to go to a Yankee's game?" one day and "I wish I could actually see the big dinosaur skeletons at the Museum like in the movie' a few months later, and after about a year he should still have no idea what you are thinking, and you should have an idea of whether he'd like the trip or not.

Of course you could spend 3000 dollars on a trip here, but, like, Lav said, you could do a really nice trip with meals out, a Broadway show, a few museums, etc for less than that. If you start looking up prices and stuff now, by then you will know which places seem to have good prices when, and how to order tickets online, and all that stuff.

(I never go anywhere or do anything, seriously, so I am not much of a resource for that.)

No matter what you decide on, I think he is a really lucky guy to have a wife who is spending three years planning for his birthday.

When is his birthday (like what month)? Because New York, Manhattan specifically, hotel rooms get pretty expensive at different times of the year. I know this because I work for a travel agency that works in wholesale and international travel. We book 40+ hotels in New York, and none of them are very cheap. Anyways... I was looking at going to New York in December, and between the flights across the country and the hotel it was too much money for my bf and I. But my friend (who is also my boss) said it's cheaper at other times of the year... I'm rambling, sorry. I think a trip is a great birthday present! And planning 3 years ahead is definitely a smart move.

Lucy, you should ask your HSKS friends we'll find you the best deals and make sure they're close to public transportation - that's all you really need in this town, right Gryffinitter?

Ok...Not to be missed places...

This is really only going to showcase my own weirdness, but you did ask.

Place number one has got to be the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Roof Garden overlooking Central Park, Real Armor on model horses, bedrooms from all over Europe, Tiffany glass windows, Greek Vases, Roman Statues, an Egyptian Mummy - and sometimes exhibits at the Costume institute.

I have no idea what the best restaurants are. The Palm Court in the Plaza is always nice for tea or something like that, because then you can say you have been to the Palm Court, and the Blue Note if you like Jazz, same reason. They are also nice experiences in themselves.

I hope they will be done sprucing up Washington Square Park by then - when you get to that neighborhood there is a restaurant where the waiters sing Opera (I have to get you the name), the Strand Book Store with over 8 Miles of used books (probably not as a much of a thrill now since everyone puts everything on the net, but still, fun) and a few places to eat just south of the Square where everyone eats. The Olive Tree is the one I've been to most recently.

I keep meaning to go to B&J trimming in teh garment district.

The Pierpont Morgan Library is not huge, has nice exhibits and a copy of the Gutenberg Bible.

And if the Met did not Medieveal you out, there is the Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park , an amazing setting and stuff Lucis Malfoy would have owned. In fact, a friend and I are totally convinced that this one cup they have - Well, Lucius Must have the same cup, but with Snakes in the bottom.

I warned you I was giving a quirky answer. DH does not take me in. I only ever go when BFF is in town from Texas, or when I meet my brothers or Mother for something. So I will spare you the Tenement Museum spiel - I had a terrific Time, but it is really not a pampering yourself weekend kind of place...Oh! Remember the Staten Island Ferry!

And LAv is totally right - public transportation is all you need in Manhattan and the on-the-edge parts of Brooklyn. And frankly, if Canarsie was a big part of your plans, just reconsider... :-P
